Huntley High School Senior Abigail McKoy Commits to Harvard University

Huntley High School graduate Abigail McKoy is heading to one of the nation's most prestigious universities after being accepted to and committing to attend Harvard University this fall.

For the accomplished senior, the acceptance represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact both inside and outside the classroom.

"The acceptance from Harvard means a lot to me," McKoy said. "It shows that all the hard work I have done throughout high school and the effort I put into my application was worth it."

At Harvard, McKoy plans to study government on the pre-law track, combining her passion for leadership, public service, and advocacy. Her decision to apply to Harvard came with encouragement from her family and a clear vision for her future.

"I decided to apply to Harvard because my dad suggested it,” McKoy said. “As someone interested in law, he thought it would be an amazing school for my major.” McKoy’s parents didn’t find out about her acceptance to Harvard until she announced it publicly during her address at Huntley High School’s graduation ceremony on May 16. 

"Abi is undoubtedly very intelligent; even more impressive is her grit. Her faith, strong character, discipline, and hard work have driven her success and will be the foundation for the great things she achieves next," said her father Maxim McKoy.

Throughout her time in Huntley Community School District 158, McKoy embraced opportunities that challenged her academically while allowing her to make a difference in the world around her. She credits the district's coursework and specialized programs with helping prepare her for her next chapter.

"I think the classes and opportunities we have at Huntley High School definitely helped," she said. "For me, joining the Global Academy and having the opportunity to become an Illinois Global Scholar helped me create an impact."

Her academic achievements and leadership have earned her numerous honors and recognitions. Through the American Legion Oratorical Speech Contest, McKoy earned first place at the regional level and second place at the state level two years in a row. She is also an Illinois Global Scholar, a recipient of a College Board national recognition award, a two-time national community service award recipient through InnerView, and an AP scholar with distinction.

Beyond academics, McKoy has been involved in school activities and leadership opportunities. Her extracurricular involvement includes National Honor Society, Student Council, varsity track, Black Student Union, HHS principal student leadership council, Silver Cord, Link Crew, and Snow Raiders. She also balances her busy schedule with a part-time job at Chili's.

"Abigail exemplifies what it means to be an empowered learner," said Superintendent Jessica Lombard. "She has challenged herself academically, embraced opportunities to lead and serve others, and used her talents to make a meaningful impact both within our schools and beyond. We are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished and look forward to seeing the positive difference she will make as she continues her educational journey at Harvard University."

Before heading off to Harvard in the fall, McKoy plans to enjoy the summer working, traveling with her family, and visiting her future campus.

As she prepares to begin her college journey, McKoy's accomplishments serve as an example of what is possible through hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to take advantage of opportunities.
